Sunday Lunch Sessions: Sunday 12th May 2024

This event includes both 'Wild Food Walk and Talk with Fieldstudy' and 'Self Sufficiency. How To Stay Afloat In Troubled Waters'

Join us for a thought-provoking Sunday Lunch Session where we delve into the concept of self-sufficiency.To begin, are you curious about Wild Food? Take a foraging walk around Ventnor with instructor Joseph Thurbin and learn about the abundance of edible plants that grow right here on our doorstep. From common weeds to edible trees, you will learn about the historical uses of common plants and how learning to identify them can invigorate our understanding of the wider landscape.

Meet at Ingram's Yard, the walk will last around 1-2 hours and will explore the unique botany of both the town and seafront. Bring a notebook, comfortable shoes and plenty of questions. Joseph Thurbin is a foraging instructor and filmmaker from the Isle of Wight, who through his company Fieldstudy seeks to teach people about the natural landscape through the universal language of delicious food.

Afterwards you'll join a workshop with artist Abi Wheeler to create a lifejacket out of recycled materials. We will use a basic pattern and select materials, construction methods and accessories to create these (non) life-saving objects. The workshop forms part of Stay Afloat; an ongoing project exploring the skill, ingenuity and futility of self-sufficiency in times of crisis. Materials supplied. No experience needed.

Abi Wheeler is an artist, creative producer and former creative director of Ryde Arts. Abi did a residency at Aspex on lifejackets using the archive at the National Museum of the Royal Navy.

Together, both events will run from 12pm-4pm
